Chapter 2: The Letters That Never Arrived

I finally stepped aside and let him in.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Danny sat down at my kitchen table — the same man I had loved at 19 — and he looked at me like no time had passed at all.

"How?" I whispered.

"They told me you couldn't have survived."

"I know what they told you," he said quietly.

"That's exactly what someone wanted you to believe."

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small bundle of envelopes held together with a rubber band.

My letters.

Every single one I had sent him in Vietnam.

"These were never delivered to me," he said.

"Someone intercepted them.

And the letters I sent back to you — someone made sure you never saw those either."

I felt the room tilt.

"Danny…

who would do that?"

He looked down at the table for a moment.

Then he looked straight at me.

"Your sister Carol was in love with me too.

You didn't know that.

But she knew I only wanted you."

My breath stopped.

Right then, my phone buzzed on the counter.

I looked down.

It was Carol.
