Chapter 1: The Ring That Never Left My Hand

When I was 19, I promised my husband I'd wait for him while he was in Vietnam, but he went missing — 55 years later, he knocked on my door and said, "Someone didn't want me to come back to you — and you won't believe who it was."
Danny and I fell in love back in high school.
Oh, we were one of those sweet little couples who seemed impossible to separate.
We were both 19 when Danny told me he wanted to marry me.
And of course, I said yes.
God, we didn't even have enough money for real wedding rings.
One day, we were sitting at a little diner, and near the entrance was one of those old vending machines filled with cheap little trinkets.
Danny put in a couple of quarters, and out came two simple metal rings in tiny plastic capsules.
I put on my little white sundress; he wore a suit he'd probably bought for his high school graduation, and Danny brought those same rings from the vending machine.
We exchanged them at the courthouse and were simply happier than we'd ever been.
But a week later, Danny was drafted and sent to Vietnam.
I promised I'd wait for him no matter how long it took.
At first, we sent letters back and forth.
But about six months later, the letters stopped coming.
Then one of Danny's friends from his unit wrote to me and said Danny had gone missing after an attack.
After the war, I even met that friend in person, and he told me there was no way Danny could have survived what had happened.
My heart was completely broken.
But I kept wearing that cheap little ring.
Even my parents got upset with me and told me I needed to forget Danny and move on.
They said I was still young and could meet someone else and have a good marriage.
But I didn't want to.
Fifty-five years passed.
I still keep that ring in a small separate box.
Yes, I live in an empty house now.
Well, not always empty.
Sometimes my sister's grandchildren come over, and I spend time with them.
What can I say?
I was never able to marry again.
Maybe that sounds foolish.
But have you ever felt like your heart belonged to only one person and there was absolutely nothing you could do about it?
That's exactly what happened to me.
But one evening, I was making myself a cup of tea when someone knocked on the door.
When I opened the door, I froze.
It was Danny.
His hair was gray, and his face was covered in wrinkles, but it was him.
My jaw dropped.
I couldn't say a single word.
Then he held out his ring from that same old vending machine and said:
"Hi, sweetheart.
We have a lot to talk about.
I never forgot you.
I think the thought of you was what gave me the strength to keep looking for you."
I tried to get even a single word out, but he continued:
"Someone didn't want me to come back to you.
And you won't believe who it was.
There's a terrible secret about your family that you don't know.
Please don't trust your sister.
Just hear me out."

Danny came back after 55 years — and he says someone in her own family kept them apart.
