The note was handwritten.
Small, careful letters, like someone who didn't want to be caught writing it.
*"Please don't call the police.
He'll know.
Just watch my son.
His name is Danny.
If we stop coming outside, something is wrong."*
I read it three times.
My hands were shaking by the third.
I work crisis lines.
I've heard fear in every form.
But this — a mother hiding a note inside a pie, trusting a stranger she'd known for two hours — this was a different kind of desperate.
I looked out my kitchen window toward their house.
Every light was off.
It was past midnight.
I almost called 911 right then.
But her words stopped me.
*He'll know.*
The next morning, I watched for them.
The husband left for work at 7.
The son came out alone around 8, sat on the porch steps, and just…
stared at the ground.
I walked over.
"Hey, Danny.
You okay?"
He looked up.
Something crossed his face — not surprise.
Relief.
Like he'd been waiting.
"She said you'd come," he said quietly.
"Your mom?"
He nodded.
Then he looked back at the front door and dropped his voice to almost nothing.
"She told me if anything happened to her — to tell you where she hid the other one."
