Chapter 1: The Pie She Begged Me Not to Cut

We Invited the New Neighbors Over for Dinner — The Mother Begged Me Not to Cut the Pie She Brought
I invited our new neighbors over for dinner the week we moved in, hoping our sons would become friends.
The mother arrived first, alone on the porch for a moment before her husband and son caught up.
"Is anyone else coming tonight?" she asked, glancing past me into the house.
"No, just us," I said.
Her shoulders dropped, like she'd been holding her breath.
When the rest of the family arrived, she was carrying a homemade lemon pie, wrapped carefully in foil.
Her husband apologized for seeming distracted, blaming a long day at work.
I work for a crisis hotline, so reading tension in a room comes naturally to me.
The mother's eyes kept flicking to her husband every time he spoke.
The son barely said a word all night.
Near the end of dinner, I reached for the pie to cut everyone a slice.
The mother's hand shot out and covered mine.
"Please don't," she said.
"Save it for later."
Her voice was too calm for how tightly she was gripping my wrist.
I laughed it off and set the knife down, but the moment stayed with me long after they left.
I kept replaying the exact way she'd said 'later' — like the word cost her something…
Around midnight, I gave up trying to sleep.
I went downstairs, pulled the pie out of the fridge, and sliced straight through it.
Something crinkled beneath the knife.
Tucked between the layers of lemon filling was a small piece of paper, folded into a tight square.
I wiped my hands and unfolded it slowly…
For a moment, I really thought her husband was the problem — but God, how wrong I was.
---
She hid something inside that pie and trusted a stranger with it.
