Chapter 4: The Coat

Nobody spoke for a moment.

Then Julian stood up.

Julian: Show me.

Arthur led him down the hallway to the guest room.

The coat was laid across the bed — a long charcoal wool coat, expensive, the kind with a deep interior pocket and a silk lining.

One of the officers was already there, standing beside it with a clear evidence bag.

The bracelet was inside the bag.

Gold chain, small sapphire clasp.

Elena's grandmother's bracelet, the one she had worn to dinner and noticed missing before dessert was served.

Julian stared at it.

Julian: She put it there herself.

Arthur: The lining had been partially unstitched and re-sewn.

Not recently.

The thread is a slightly different color.

Someone prepared that pocket in advance.

Julian turned around and walked back to the main room.

Elena was seated now, her father beside her.

She looked up when Julian came back in.

Julian: Did you know about the coat?

Elena: No.

We knew about the pattern.

We didn't know how she was going to do it tonight.

Julian: But you knew she was going to do something.

Elena: We suspected.

That's why Arthur was here.

That's why my father came when I called.

Julian sat down across from her.

Julian: You let it happen.

It wasn't an accusation.

His voice was too flat for that.

It was something closer to understanding something he didn't want to understand.

Elena: We needed her to do it in front of witnesses.

If we had warned you, you would have warned her.

And she would have walked away clean.

Again.

Julian: Again.

Elena: The housekeeper she accused three years ago.

The woman lost her job, her reference, her apartment.

She had two children.

Victoria did the same thing — planted something, called before it was reported, had her removed within the hour.

The woman never recovered from it.

Julian was quiet for a long time.

Julian: Why didn't you tell me any of this when we got engaged?

Elena: I tried.

Do you remember the dinner at your parents' house in March?

I said I was uncomfortable with how your mother spoke to the staff.

You said I was being sensitive.

Julian closed his eyes.

Elena: I'm not saying that to hurt you.

I'm saying it because you asked.

Julian: I know.

He opened his eyes and looked at the evidence bag on the table, where Arthur had set it down.

Julian: What happens now?

Arthur: The officers will process the coat.

The call log and footage go to the detective assigned to the case.

Given the prior incident, the prosecutor's office will likely treat this as a pattern of behavior, not an isolated event.

That changes the charge classification significantly.

Julian: And Victoria?

Arthur: She left with Eleanor.

They'll both be questioned.

Victoria's involvement depends on what the footage shows and what Eleanor says.

Right now Eleanor is the primary.

Julian looked at Thomas.

Julian: I owe you an apology.

Thomas: You owe my daughter one first.

Julian nodded.

He turned to Elena.

Julian: I'm sorry.

For tonight.

For March.

For every time I didn't listen.

Elena looked at him for a long moment.

Elena: I know you are.

It wasn't forgiveness yet.

But it wasn't a door closing either.

Julian's phone lit up on the table.

He looked at the screen.

Victoria's name.

He turned it face-down.

Arthur's phone rang instead.

He stepped into the hallway to answer it.

When he came back, his expression had shifted.

Arthur: Eleanor's attorney arrived at the station.

She's talking.

Julian: What is she saying?

Arthur: That's the problem.

She's not just talking about the bracelet.

He paused.

Arthur: She's talking about the prenuptial agreement.

She says she has a copy with Elena's signature on it.

A version Elena never saw.
