Chapter 3: What the Camera Saw

The two officers didn't move far into the room.

They didn't need to.

Their presence alone changed the air.

One of them looked at Arthur Vance.

Officer: Mr.

Vance.

You said you had documentation?

Arthur: Footage, timestamps, and a call log.

All verified.

He turned the tablet toward them.

The officer leaned in, watched the clip, and straightened.

Officer: Ma'am.

He looked at Eleanor.

We're going to need to ask you some questions.

Eleanor lifted her chin.

Eleanor: I have nothing to say without my attorney.

Victoria stepped forward, her voice dropping to something sharp and controlled.

Victoria: This is a private residence.

You were not invited here.

Whatever that man has shown you was obtained without our consent—

Thomas: The cameras are in the hallway of my son-in-law's home.

He gave Arthur full authorization to pull the footage this morning.

Victoria turned to Julian.

Victoria: You did what?

Julian didn't answer her.

He was still looking at his mother.

Julian: The call was made eighteen minutes before.

That means before anyone reported anything.

Before anyone even noticed the bracelet was gone.

How did you know to call?

Eleanor's jaw tightened.

Eleanor: I was concerned.

I had a feeling something was wrong.

Julian: A feeling.

Eleanor: Yes.

Julian: You had a feeling eighteen minutes before a bracelet went missing.

And you called someone.

Who did you call, Mother?

Silence.

Arthur set a second document on the table.

A printed call log, two pages, stapled at the corner.

Arthur: The number she called belongs to a woman named Diane Marsh.

She works for a private security firm your mother has retained for the past four years.

The same firm was used twice before — once during a dispute with a former housekeeper, and once during a legal matter involving a previous employee of your father's company.

Julian picked up the pages.

His hands weren't steady.

Julian: You've done this before.

Eleanor: That is not what this is.

Julian: Then what is it?

Eleanor: It is protection.

For this family.

From people who insert themselves where they don't belong.

The words landed in the room like something thrown.

Elena hadn't moved from where she stood near her father.

Thomas had one hand at her back.

She hadn't spoken since the officers arrived.

She didn't need to.

Every person in that room was now looking at Eleanor, and Eleanor knew it.

Victoria tried again.

Victoria: Mr.

Sterling, I understand you are upset.

But you must see that your daughter's position in this family has always been—

Thomas: Careful.

One word.

Victoria stopped.

Thomas: Very careful about what you say next.

The officer who had been reviewing the tablet looked up.

Officer: Mrs.

Eleanor Ashford.

I need you to come with us to answer a few questions.

You are not under arrest.

But we do need a formal statement.

Eleanor looked at Julian one last time.

Eleanor: This is not over.

Julian: No.

It isn't.

She walked out with the officers.

Victoria followed, already on her phone, her voice low and clipped.

The front door closed behind them.

The room was quiet.

Julian set the call log back on the table.

He looked at it for a long moment.

Then he looked at Elena.

Julian: How long have you known?

Elena: Known what?

Julian: That it wasn't the first time.

Elena glanced at her father.

Thomas gave a small nod.

Elena: Arthur found the first case three weeks ago.

We didn't say anything because we needed to be sure.

Julian pulled out a chair and sat down.

Not because he was calm.

Because his legs had stopped working properly.

Julian: Three weeks.

Elena: Yes.

Julian: And you stayed.

Elena: I stayed because I love you.

Not because I didn't know.

Julian pressed both hands flat on the table and stared at the call log.

Then Arthur's phone rang.

He answered it, listened for four seconds, and looked at Thomas.

Arthur: They found the bracelet.

Julian's head came up.

May you like

Arthur: It was in the lining of Victoria's coat.

The one she left in the guest room.
