Chapter 2: The Signature That Should Not Exist

For a moment, I could not speak.

“How old is your son?”

Gavin adjusted his cuff as if we were discussing a business appointment.

“Six.”

“Six?” My voice cracked.

“We’ve been married for five years.”

“It’s complicated, Paige.”

“No, it isn’t.

You lied to me every day of our marriage.”

Our daughter stirred against my chest, and I lowered my voice.

“Who is she?”

“That doesn’t matter.

What matters is that I’m leaving today.

The house, the accounts, and the company shares are in my name.

Don’t make this harder than it needs to be.”

Then my phone lit up on the bedside table.

It was a message from my mother.

DON’T SIGN ANYTHING.

WE FOUND HER—AND SHE ISN’T THE ONLY ONE.

Gavin saw the screen, and the color drained from his face.

“What has your family been doing?” he demanded.

Before I could answer, the door opened.

My mother stepped inside carrying a thick envelope, followed by a man in a dark suit.

She placed the envelope beside me and stared directly at Gavin.

“Tell Paige why your signature appears on two marriage certificates.”

Gavin froze—but the man behind her pulled out another document and said, “That isn’t the worst thing we found.”
