The Moment Everything Changed
Two hours after my daughter was born, my husband remained beside the window of my hospital room, gazing out over the rooftops of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The morning sunlight streamed across his tailored gray suit and the silver watch I had given him for our fifth anniversary.
He looked utterly composed, polished, and completely unaffected by the fact that our lives had just changed forever.
I was drained, aching, and drowning in emotions I could barely put into words.
Our daughter was sleeping against my chest, wrapped securely in a white blanket covered with tiny lavender stars.
She had my dark hair and her father’s small dimple near her chin.
For a few minutes, I did nothing but watch her breathe.
Then I glanced over at my husband.
“Gavin, do you want to hold her?”
He kept his back turned.
At first, I thought he just had not heard me.
“She’s been waiting to meet you,” I said softly.
His shoulders lifted as he took a slow breath.
Then he turned around and faced me.
There was no happiness in his eyes.
No nervous grin, no tenderness, no excitement about becoming a father.
Only impatience.
“Paige, there’s something I need to tell you before anyone comes in here with more paperwork.”
The tone of his voice made me instinctively pull our baby closer.
“What paperwork?”
“The hospital forms.
The acknowledgment papers.
Whatever they expect me to sign.”
I stared at him, waiting for him to explain.
He moved toward the bed but stopped several feet away, as if even standing close to us was already asking too much of him.
Then he said the words that split my life into two completely different parts, everything that existed before that morning and everything that came afterward.
“I already have a son with another woman.
I’m not signing anything for this baby.”
