Chapter 2: The Name That Made Everyone Go Pale
No one moved.
The wedding hall was completely still.
Guests stood frozen between the chairs and the aisle, watching Adrian hold the photograph with both hands.
Victoria broke first.
"Adrian, listen to me.
Those children are not your responsibility.
Whatever she told you—"
"Stop talking."
His voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
Clara wiped her face with the back of her hand.
The baby was still pressed against her chest.
"Her name is Mia," Clara said.
"She's fourteen months old.
And the boy outside — his name is Daniel.
He's four."
Adrian looked up slowly.
"Where is he?"
"He wouldn't come in.
He was scared."
Adrian walked past Victoria without another word.
He pushed open the side door himself.
A small boy was sitting on the steps outside, hugging his knees.
He looked up when the door opened.
Adrian crouched down.
The boy had his eyes.
Behind Adrian, Victoria's voice came sharp and fast.
"Don't do this.
You don't know what she's been telling them.
She could have coached them.
She could have—"
"Victoria." Adrian didn't turn around.
"Who is the woman in this photograph?"
Silence.
"I asked you a question."
Victoria's jaw tightened.
Then, very quietly, she said a name.
And every person in that hall who heard it went pale.
