Chapter 6: The Voice in the Dark

We reached Miriam’s office with ninety minutes left.
She called the bank, the title company, and the attorney handling the Harbor View sale.
“They won’t stop closing without direct evidence of forgery,” she said.
“The notarized deed still carries legal weight.”
Caleb set his phone down.
“There’s something I need to tell Claire.”
“Not now,” I said.
“It has to be now.”
His eyes stayed on the table.
“I learned about Ethan and Vanessa eight days before I contacted you.”
I stared at him.
“You let me keep believing Ethan was with Ryan?”
“I hoped Vanessa would come home.”
“So you protected your marriage while mine was being stripped apart.”
“Yes.”
The single word hurt more than an excuse.
“You had eight days to warn me about the account.”
“I didn’t know about the money until later.”
“But you knew where my husband was.”
Caleb nodded.
“I chose myself first.
I’m sorry.”
My phone rang.
Ethan’s voice filled the room when I answered.
“Have you signed?”
“No.”
“Then perhaps you should imagine explaining to Lily why her father lives somewhere beautiful while she loses her home.”
“You’re using our daughter to frighten me.”
“I’m giving you a choice.”
“You already made your choice.”
“And Caleb made his.
Ask him how long he watched before deciding you were useful.”
My eyes moved to Caleb.
Ethan laughed softly.
“Even your rescuer saved himself first.”
He ended the call.
I reached for the table, missed it, and slid into the nearest chair.
“I can’t do this,” I said.
“Every person in this room knew something before I did.”
Diane entered carrying Nora’s diaper bag.
She set it down and knelt beside me.
“Look at me, Claire.”
“I’m going to lose the house.”
“No.
My son is going to lose the lie that gave him control.”
“You can’t promise that.”
“I can give you something better than a promise.”
She placed an old phone on Miriam’s desk.
“Ethan gave me this phone last year.
Our accounts stayed linked after I bought a new one.
Last night, I found a voice recording uploaded to the family cloud.”
Miriam picked it up.
“Who recorded it?”
“Ethan, accidentally.
The screen shows it began while he was calling me.”
Diane pressed play.
Ethan’s muffled voice came through first.
Claire never looks at paperwork.
Copy the signature from the hospital insurance form.
Ryan answered, clearer than Ethan.
My journal will show she appeared before me.
But once this is done, I want the ten thousand you promised.
Then Vanessa spoke.
And the equity money is released before she notices?
Ethan laughed.
By the time Claire understands, Harbor View will belong to us.
No one moved when the recording ended.
Diane wiped her face.
“I raised him to believe being clever mattered more than being decent.”
“You came here anyway,” I said.
“I came because those girls deserve a grandmother who tells the truth.”
Miriam connected the phone to her computer.
“We need the original file and its metadata.”
The progress bar moved slowly across the screen.
Caleb pointed at the time stamp.
“It was recorded at Ryan’s house.”
Miriam nodded.
“And three voices identify the plan.”
My phone lit up with a photograph from Ethan.
He and Vanessa were standing beneath a Harbor View sign.

Closing now, the message read.
Then the upload froze at ninety-eight percent—and Diane’s old phone went black.
