Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

Ethan’s eyes moved between Caleb and me.
“Claire, whatever he told you, he’s lying.”
Caleb’s expression hardened.
“I haven’t told her half of it.”
My hands began to shake, but I forced my voice to stay calm.
“You said you were staying with Ryan.”
“I was.”
“No,” Caleb said.
“You were staying with my wife, Vanessa.”
Ethan stepped toward him.
“You need to get out of my house.”
“Our house,” I corrected.
“The one you abandoned along with your children.”
For the first time, Ethan looked ashamed—but only for a second.
Then he pointed at Caleb.
“He came here because he wants revenge.
Don’t let him manipulate you.”
Caleb placed a thick envelope on the table.
“Ask Ethan why he transferred money from your joint savings account three days after he left.”
My stomach dropped.
That account held nearly everything we had saved.
“How much?” I whispered.
Before Caleb could answer, Ethan’s phone lit up beside his suitcase.
A message from Vanessa appeared across the screen:
DID CLAIRE SIGN THE HOUSE PAPERS YET?
I stared at Ethan.
“What house papers?”
He lunged for the phone, but Caleb blocked him.
Then Caleb opened the envelope and slid one document toward me.
At the bottom was a signature that looked exactly like mine.
Except I had never signed it.
