Chapter 2: The Second Page

Elaine didn't flinch.

"Marcus agrees with everything on that list," she said.

"We discussed it together."

My hands were shaking.

I set the paper down before I dropped it.

Rule 10 said I was required to refer to Elaine's mother as the baby's grandmother — and to refer to myself only as "Marcus's mother" in the child's presence.

Not Grandma.

Not Nana.

Nothing.

"You want me to erase myself," I said.

"I want the baby to have one grandmother figure.

Not two competing ones."

I couldn't speak.

I just stared at her.

Then I heard the front door open.

Marcus walked in.

He looked at the paper on the table.

He looked at me.

He didn't look surprised.

"Mom," he said quietly.

"Just sign it."

Something in his voice was wrong.

Not cold — afraid.

He was afraid of something.

"Marcus." I kept my voice steady.

"Did you write any part of this list?"

He didn't answer.

Elaine answered for him.

"He didn't need to.

He already knows what happens if you don't sign."

I looked at my son.

He looked away.

That was when I noticed the second sheet of paper on the counter behind her — the one she hadn't shown me yet.
