Chapter 1: The List

Three weeks before my first grandchild was born, my daughter-in-law handed me a list of 12 rules and said, "Sign it or you'll never hold this baby." I agreed—until I reached Rule 10.

I'm 62, and my son Marcus has always been the center of my little family.

Watching him grow up was bittersweet, but for years, I quietly hoped that one day I'd get to become a grandmother.

When Marcus told me his wife Elaine was expecting a baby, I cried so hard I couldn't breathe.

That same afternoon I bought a tiny yellow blanket and a stuffed elephant—because Marcus loved elephants when he was little.

For months, I prepared.

Freezer meals.

Knitted booties.

I even took an infant CPR class at the community center.

Then, three weeks before the due date, Elaine invited me over.

She wanted to "discuss expectations."

I brought flowers and her favorite strawberry cake.

She sat me at the dining table.

No small talk.

She slid a printed sheet across the surface—twelve numbered rules with a signature line at the bottom.

"Read carefully," she said.

"Every one is non-negotiable."

I put on my reading glasses.

Rule 1—No unannounced visits.

Fine.

Rule 2—No sugar before age two.

Okay.

Rule 3—No posting photos online.

Understood.

I kept reading.

Some were strict, but I told myself: she's a new mother, she's protective, this is her child too.

Rule 5—No religious discussions.

I bit my tongue but nodded.

Rule 6—No gifts without pre-approval.

I sighed and kept reading.

Rule 7—I was not allowed to call the baby "my granddaughter."

I stared at the page.

"Elaine...

are you serious?"

I did.

Somehow, every rule after that was worse.

And then I reached Rule 10.

I read it once.

Then again.

My stomach dropped.

I slowly looked up at my daughter-in-law.

"Does Marcus know you're asking me to do this?"

What was Rule 10?

And does Marcus even know what Elaine put on that list?
