Chapter 1: The Secret My Daughter Kept

Three months after we hired a new nanny, my 5-year-old whispered, "Mommy, Daddy hugs Miss Anna when you're not home.
He says it's their secret." So three days later, I came home early without warning anyone.
My name is Rachel.
I'm 38.
When I decided to go back to work, finding a nanny for our daughter Lily became a nightmare.
Everyone was either too expensive or just didn't feel right.
Then my husband, Daniel, suggested Anna.
"She worked for my brother.
I've known her for years.
We can trust her."
Anna was 34, warm, wonderful with Lily, and charged almost half what the others did.
Daniel pushed hard.
"Rachel, she's perfect.
Why are we still looking?"
His insistence felt strange, but within days, Lily adored Anna.
Soon, I stopped questioning it.
Three months later, Lily climbed into my bed.
"Mommy?
Can I tell you Daddy's secret?"
I smiled.
"What secret?"
She lowered her voice.
"Daddy hugs Miss Anna when you're at work."
My smile faded.
Then Lily wrapped her arms around herself.
"Like this.
For a long time.
Daddy says it's their secret."
I barely slept.
Suddenly, I recalled how hard Daniel had pushed to hire Anna.
But before I confronted Daniel, I needed to see it for myself.
Three days later, my afternoon meeting was canceled.
I came home two hours early without telling Daniel.
I opened the front door as quietly as I could.
What I saw inside made me realize Lily hadn't misunderstood a thing.
