Chapter 2: This Wasn't the First Time

Grant's jaw tightened.
He glanced at Lucinda, then back at Silvio.
"You're reading too much into it," he said.
"I misspoke."
"You didn't misspeak." Silvio stepped closer.
"A man doesn't misspeak about two children locked in a car."
Lucinda pushed herself up from the bench.
Her voice was flat.
"They're fine.
Let it go."
"They're not fine." Silvio turned to her.
"Mia hasn't said a word since we found them.
Not one word."
Lucinda looked away.
One of the bodyguards moved toward Silvio.
Grant raised a hand and stopped him.
Something in Grant's expression shifted — not guilt, not fear.
Something colder.
"You want to know the real reason?" Grant said quietly.
"Ask your sister.
She made the call."
The air went still.
Silvio looked at Lucinda.
She didn't deny it.
She didn't look at him either.
Then Ethan, still in the bodyguard's arms, pressed his face against the man's shoulder and whispered something.
The bodyguard's face went pale.
Silvio crossed to him immediately.
"What did he say?"
The bodyguard hesitated.
"What did he say?"
The man looked up slowly.
"He said…
this wasn't the first time."
