Chapter 1: The Wrong Question

"They locked us up because I said I was hungry."
Grant stepped toward them and moved into Silvio's path.
Lucinda casually spun the SUV key around one finger.
Grant glanced at the two overheated children.
Then he smirked.
"They're still alive?"
Silvio slowly handed Ethan to another bodyguard.
Grant swung first.
Silvio slipped the punch and drove him backward through the rolling valet kiosk.
Ticket rolls burst across the pavement as luggage carts and travel bins collapsed around him.
Lucinda turned away with the SUV key.
Silvio caught her wrist, took it, and sent her backward into the brochure stand.
Estate maps scattered across the stone as she dropped against the waiting bench.
Two bodyguards closed in behind them.
Silvio looked from his sister to her husband.
"What's the real reason you did that to those two children?"
Grant's face changed.
But Silvio couldn't ignore something Grant had already said.
He hadn't asked whether Ethan and Mia were all right.
He had asked why they were still alive.
---
Grant didn't ask if those children were safe.
He asked why they were *still alive*.
