Chapter 6: What Alexander Built
The server was a rented unit in a data facility in northern Virginia.
Gerald had known about it for three months.
He had been waiting for the right moment — specifically, for a moment when Alexander would be publicly visible, surrounded by witnesses, and unable to quietly make things disappear.
A wedding, it turned out, was ideal.
Victoria's attorney, Margaret Chen, was in Gerald's contact within six hours of the arrest.
By the following morning, she had a court order.
By afternoon, a forensic team was inside the data facility.
What they found took four days to fully catalog.
Victoria sat across from Margaret in a conference room on the sixth floor of a downtown office building and listened to the summary.
"Fourteen companies," Margaret said.
"Six of them shell entities.
The other eight are legitimate businesses that he used to move money through the shells." She turned a page.
"Thirty-one individuals identified so far as targets of financial fraud.
Rachel Donovan was not the first.
She was simply the first one who found the server."
"And the others?"
"Some were convicted of crimes they didn't commit.
Some lost businesses.
Some lost homes." Margaret looked up.
"Two of them didn't survive it."
Victoria was quiet.
"He built a system," Margaret continued.
"He would identify someone — usually someone with access to financial information, someone who worked close to him.
He'd get close to them, let them see something they shouldn't, then use his connections to have them discredited before they could act." She set the page down.
"Rachel was different only because she had a child he could use as additional leverage."
"To keep her quiet inside prison," Victoria said.
"Yes.
As long as he had Lily, Rachel couldn't speak to investigators without risking Lily's safety.
He'd made that clear through intermediaries." Margaret paused.
"He never contacted Rachel directly.
He was careful.
But she understood."
"And Lily?"
"Lily was held at a property in Maryland.
One of the shell companies owned it.
She was kept by two individuals who are now also in custody." Margaret closed the folder.
"She was not physically harmed beyond the confinement.
The chest was used only for transport.
He moved her yesterday — the day before the wedding — because he was concerned someone was getting close."
"Gerald," Victoria said.
"Gerald."
Victoria looked at the closed folder.
"He was going to marry me," she said.
"With all of this running underneath."
"Yes."
"What did he want from me?"
Margaret hesitated.
"Your family's investment portfolio.
Your father's contacts in the European banking sector.
And your name." She said it carefully.
"Victoria Langford is a name that opens doors.
He needed doors."
Victoria absorbed that.
"So I was the next target," she said.
"You were the next acquisition," Margaret said.
"There's a distinction, but it's not a comfortable one."
Victoria stood and walked to the window.
The city moved below, indifferent and ordinary.
"What happens to him now?" she asked.
"The DA is filing forty-seven counts.
Federal charges are being coordinated separately." Margaret joined her at the window.
"His attorneys are already talking about a deal.
He'll offer information on his network in exchange for reduced exposure."
"Will they take it?"
"Probably.
Partially." Margaret glanced at her.
"He won't walk away from this, Victoria.
The server alone is enough to put him away for a very long time."
Victoria nodded.
She looked at the city for another moment.
"Rachel Donovan," she said.
"What happens to her conviction?"
"Her attorney filed for emergency review this morning.
Given what's on the server — including the original fabricated evidence he used against her — the conviction will almost certainly be overturned." Margaret paused.
"It will take time.
The system is slow.
But it will happen."
"Make sure it happens faster," Victoria said.
"Whatever resources that requires.
Use mine."
