Chapter 6: His Father’s Final Warning

Daniel locked the boardroom door.
Reid opened the audio file, and my father’s voice came through the laptop speakers.
“You altered the clinic records,” he said.
Victoria answered, “I corrected a problem you were too weak to solve.”
“Lily is Nathan’s daughter.
The trust belongs to her.”
“Nathan doesn’t remember either of them.”
“Because you kept Grace away.”
“I kept him stable.”
“You kept him available.”
Victoria reached for the laptop, but Reid pulled it back.
“Turn that off.”
“No,” I said.
“We’re going to hear all of it.”
My father’s voice returned.
“I put the original documents where you cannot reach them.
Daniel has the key.”
“You’ll change your mind.”
“I already changed it once when I sent Grace away.
I won’t fail that child twice.”
A door slammed on the recording.
Then my father spoke again, much more quietly.
“If anything happens to me, Nathan must know Victoria threatened Grace.”
Victoria knocked a water glass toward the laptop.
Daniel caught it before it tipped.
“That recording is illegal,” she said.
“You recorded it,” Reid replied.
“Your phone uploaded it to the family account.”
“I was protecting myself from an unstable old man.”
“Then why did you delete it?”
Her eyes moved around the table.
Nobody answered for her.
Conrad pushed his chair back.
“You told me Grace was extorting him.”
“She was.”
“You told me no trust existed.”
“It doesn’t.”
Daniel placed a brass key on the table.
“First National Bank.
Box 417.”
Two hours later, a bank officer carried a metal box into a private room.
Daniel opened it while Grace held Lily on her lap.
Inside lay our marriage certificate, a verified paternity report, and an irrevocable trust signed four years earlier.
Beneath them was a letter in my handwriting.
Grace touched the signature.
“You wrote this before the accident.”
I read aloud.
“If I cannot care for Lily, Grace will serve as trustee.
My father will act only as temporary protector.
No spouse, partner, board member, or relative may alter Lily’s rights.”
“You created the trust,” Daniel said.
“Your father merely preserved it.”
I looked at Grace.
“I protected her before I forgot her.”
“You did,” she whispered.
Lily climbed from her lap and pressed her small hand over mine.
“Do you remember now?”
“No, sweetheart.”
Her face fell.
“But I believe you.
And I’m not leaving.”
Grace’s shoulders shook.
I held her while Daniel quietly turned away.
The bank-room door opened.
Victoria entered with two attorneys and a process server.
“You’re all finished,” she said.
One attorney handed Daniel a court order.
“The trust is frozen pending a forgery investigation,” he announced.
“All documents must remain with the bank.”
Victoria set another folder in front of Grace.
“And this is notice of a civil claim for extortion, identity fraud, and unlawful entry.”
“You know those allegations are false,” Grace said.
“I know you signed a settlement.”
“Under false pretenses.”
“Prove it.”
I moved between them.
“You forged the paternity test.”
Victoria smiled.
“Then why did the board remove you instead of me?”
The process server sealed the box.
A bank guard stepped beside the door.

Victoria leaned toward Grace.
“By tomorrow morning, Nathan will have no company, you’ll have no trust, and Lily will have no father willing to admit any of this happened.”
