Chapter 2: The Name on the Envelope

“Daddy?” I repeated, staring at Lily.

“Grace, why did she call me that?”

Grace struggled to sit up, keeping one arm around her daughter.

“Nathan, I can explain—but first, get Lily away from Victoria.”

“Don’t listen to her!” Victoria snapped.

“She trained that child to say it.

This is about your money.”

Lily flinched at Victoria’s voice and reached for me.

Instinct took over.

I crossed the kitchen, lifted her into my arms, and felt her tiny fingers clutch my shirt.

“You came back,” she whispered.

“Mommy said you might not remember us.”

My stomach turned.

“Remember you from where?”

Victoria lunged toward Grace’s fallen handbag.

Grace caught the strap first.

“Give me that!” Victoria shouted.

“Why?” I demanded.

“What’s inside?”

Grace pulled out a sealed envelope, but Victoria’s fear vanished when she saw it.

“That proves nothing,” she said too quickly.

Grace looked at me, tears filling her eyes.

“I wasn’t stealing from your safe, Nathan.

I was returning what your father hid there four years ago.”

She handed me the envelope.

My name was written across the front—in my late father’s handwriting.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed my family attorney.

I answered and put him on speaker.

“Nathan,” he said urgently, “don’t let Victoria leave.

We found the original beneficiary—and it isn’t you.”

Victoria suddenly ran for the door.
