Chapter 2: The Marriage Certificate
Amanda didn't stop walking until she reached the far end of the vineyard path, away from the chairs, away from the flowers, away from all of it.
Sophie stayed close beside her.
Behind them, they could hear Ryan's voice rising.
"Melissa, this is not the time—"
"Not the time?" Her laugh was sharp.
"You told me it was over.
You told me you were coming home."
Amanda stopped.
She turned slowly.
Melissa was standing in the middle of the aisle now, the little boy still holding her hand.
She wasn't screaming.
She was something worse than screaming.
She was calm.
"How long?" Amanda asked.
Melissa looked at her directly.
"Seven years.
We have a son.
His name is Daniel."
Ryan moved toward Amanda.
"I was going to tell you—"
"When?" Sophie said.
"After the wedding?"
Ryan's mother had both hands over her mouth.
A few guests had already started filming on their phones.
Then Melissa reached into her bag and pulled out a folded document.
She held it out toward Amanda.
"He's not divorced," she said quietly.
"He never filed.
I have the marriage certificate right here."
Amanda didn't take it.
She didn't need to.
The look on Ryan's face said everything.
"Amanda, please—"
She turned away from him for the last time.
But what she found out next — about where Ryan had been the night before the wedding — made even Melissa go silent.
