Chapter 1: The Image on Claire's Camera

The officiant had barely lifted his hand for silence when Sophie Carter broke away from the second row.

Her small white shoes struck the stone aisle hard enough to turn every head under the vine-covered wedding arbor.

She was already crying by the time she reached the front.

"Mom!

Stop!

Don't marry him!"

Amanda Carter stared at her daughter as if she had suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

"Sophie!

What are you doing?"

Ryan Blake's smile vanished.

"Get her away from here."

Sophie stopped several feet from him.

She had heard Ryan use a sharp voice before, mostly when he thought Amanda was out of the room.

But he had never spoken that way in front of nearly a hundred wedding guests.

Amanda turned on him.

"Ryan."

"What?" he said.

"She's disrupting the ceremony."

Sophie pointed toward Claire Morgan, the wedding photographer standing beside the first row.

"I saw the picture!"

Ryan's expression changed so quickly Sophie almost missed it.

"What picture?"

Claire lowered her camera.

"Sophie—"

The girl hurried toward her.

"Please."

Before Claire could decide whether to intervene, Sophie took hold of the camera strap and turned the rear screen toward her mother.

"This one."

Amanda stepped down from the raised platform.

The photograph filled the screen.

Ryan stood behind one of the vineyard's stone storage buildings.

His hand was around another woman's waist.

The woman's face was partly turned away, but there was no ambiguity about the kiss.

Amanda stopped breathing for a moment.

"Ryan...

who is she?"

Ryan came down from the platform.

"Amanda, listen to me.

It's not what you think."

Claire's voice was quiet but steady.

"I took that ten minutes before the ceremony."

Ryan looked at her.

"You were photographing us all morning.

You know exactly how misleading a single frame can be."

Claire did not answer.

Amanda took the camera from Sophie.

Her thumb moved over the screen.

"Mom," Sophie whispered.

Amanda enlarged the image.

The woman's left hand rested against Ryan's chest.

A gold wedding band was visible on her ring finger.

Amanda looked up.

"She's wearing a wedding ring."

Ryan reached for the camera.

"Give me that."

Sophie moved between them and pulled it back against her chest.

"Why are you so scared of Mom seeing it?"

A few guests shifted uncomfortably.

Ryan's mother rose from her chair.

"Ryan, what is going on?"

He ignored her.

"Amanda, I can explain this.

But not in front of everyone."

Amanda stared at him.

"Then start with her name."

Before he could answer, the sound of a car door slamming carried across the vineyard courtyard.

Then a woman's voice cut through the ceremony.

"Ryan!"

Ryan froze.

Sophie turned.

The woman from the photograph was walking toward them.

Beside her was a boy who looked about six years old.

Ryan whispered one word.

"Melissa."

Amanda heard him.

So did Sophie.

Melissa stopped at the edge of the aisle.

Her face was pale with anger.

"Are you really getting married while your wife is still waiting for you at home?"

No one moved.

The boy beside her clutched her hand.

Amanda slowly lowered the camera.

"Your wife?"

Ryan shut his eyes.

Only for a second.

But it was long enough.

Amanda handed the camera back to Claire.

Then she took Sophie's hand.

"Come with me."

Ryan stepped in front of her.

"Amanda, please.

You don't understand."

She looked at him without raising her voice.

"Then move."

He did.

Not because he wanted to.

Because for the first time that afternoon, everyone was watching him instead of the bride.

Amanda walked Sophie away from the altar.

The wedding never reached the vows.
