Chapter 2: The Crack in the Story

I held my phone up so the entire room could see the screen.
"Say her name, Ryan.
Go ahead.
Tell everyone here that Emily is d*ad."
He said nothing.
His jaw tightened, but no words came.
A woman near the front row whispered to her husband.
A man in a gray suit stood up slowly.
The silence was louder than anything Ryan could have shouted.
Then Vanessa stepped forward.
"This is insane.
Emily d*ed.
We all grieved.
You need to leave."
I looked at her.
"Did you know she was still alive when he proposed to you?"
Her face changed.
Just for a second — but the whole room saw it.
Ryan moved toward me.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
"I have a recording," I said.
"Taken this morning.
Emily's voice.
The name of the facility.
Eight months of lies in four minutes."
Lily grabbed my sleeve.
She hadn't let go since I picked her up.
Ryan's best man put a hand on Ryan's shoulder and said quietly, "Don't."
That was when an older woman in the third row stood up.
She was shaking.
I didn't recognize her — but Ryan clearly did, because the color left his face completely.
She looked at Ryan and said, "I was her nurse.
And I think it's time someone told the truth about that accident."

What that nurse revealed next — and what was really inside that box Ryan brought to Emily — is in the full story.
