Chapter 8: The Condition Her Mother Never Told Her

The clause was eleven lines long.
Charlotte read it twice.
Then a third time.
The words didn't change.
*In the event that Charlotte Eleanor Vale assumes full ownership of Solmere Holdings, she is hereby bound by the following condition, as a reflection of her mother's final wish and the founding values of the Solmere family trust:*
*The position of General Manager of the Solmere Hotel shall be permanently reserved for, and offered first to, any direct descendant of Mr.
Arthur Mendez, in recognition of his loyalty, labor, and friendship to the Vale family across more than two decades of service.*
Charlotte looked up from the page.
Rosa was watching her.
"You knew," Charlotte said.
Rosa's expression didn't change.
"I knew there was something in there about my father.
Your mother told me.
She said it wasn't charity — she said it was a debt the Vale family owed him, and she intended to pay it properly." She paused.
"My father worked for your grandfather.
Then for your father.
Then for your mother.
Forty-one years.
He retired two years ago when his knees gave out.
He never asked for anything."
"She gave him this."
"She gave his family the chance to earn it," Rosa said.
"That's different.
Your mother was careful about the difference."
Charlotte folded the document slowly.
She thought about her mother sitting in this building — ill, frightened, watching the people she trusted most move against her — and still finding the clarity to think about Arthur Mendez's knees and his forty-one years and what was owed to a man who had never once asked.
"Do you want it?" Charlotte said.
"The position."
Rosa blinked.
"Me?"
"You've worked here nineteen years.
You know this building better than anyone Vivienne ever hired." Charlotte held her gaze.
"Do you want it?"
Rosa was quiet for a long moment.
"I want to think about it," she said finally.
"Is that all right?"
"Take all the time you need."
Charlotte's phone rang.
Gerald.
She answered.
"The forensic team found the subsidiary accounts," he said.
"Holt and Ashworth Private Holdings.
Three years of transfers.
The total is just over four million dollars."
"Can we prove it was unauthorized?"
"We can prove it was never disclosed to the board, never approved by the owner, and was routed through a shell company registered in Delaware with no operating history." A pause.
"Charlotte, Daniel Ashworth is in the building.
He came in through the private entrance twenty minutes ago.
He's on the fourteenth floor."
Charlotte was already moving toward the stairwell door.
"Don't let him leave," she said.
"I can't physically—"
"Gerald.
May you like
Don't let him leave."
She pushed through the door and took the stairs.
