Chapter 2: She Didn't Act Alone

Emily didn't move.
She didn't cry.
She didn't deny it.
She just looked at the little girl and said, very quietly, "How did she find you?"
That was when I knew.
She wasn't asking about Caroline.
She was asking about the child.
I stepped between them.
"Don't."
Emily's expression shifted.
Something cold came into her eyes that I had never seen before — or maybe I had, and I had simply never understood what I was looking at.
"Daniel." Her voice was calm.
"You don't know the full picture."
"Then explain it to me."
She said nothing.
The investigator touched my arm.
"There's something else."
He held up a printed document.
A wire transfer.
Dated fourteen months ago.
The amount was large enough that my hands went still.
The recipient account was registered under a name I didn't recognize.
But the home address attached to it?
It was this house.
I looked at Emily.
She finally looked away.
Then the little girl tugged my sleeve and held up something small — a folded piece of paper she had been clutching since she arrived.
"Mommy said give this to you.
Only you."
I unfolded it slowly.
The handwriting was Caroline's.
The first line read: *"She didn't act alone."*
