Chapter 1: The Child Who Called Me Daddy

The little girl called me "Daddy," but what the police found hidden inside my walls proved someone had been listening to my every word for years.

The child touched my cheek.

"Daddy…"

Then she glanced toward the ceiling.

"Mommy said you hear everything."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Police searched the hidden space.

Behind a blanket was a small wireless microphone.

Then another.

And another.

Someone had wired the walls.

The recordings led to a woman named Caroline Webb.

Our former live-in nanny.

She disappeared suddenly three years ago.

Emily told me Caroline st0le from us.

That was a lie.

Caroline had discovered Emily secretly recording my business calls from inside the house.

She began collecting copies.

Then she vanished.

The little girl was Caroline's daughter.

Before disappearing, Caroline had apparently taught her:

**"If you ever see Daniel, call him Daddy.

He'll stop and listen."**

It was the fastest way for a frightened child to get my full attention.

Then investigators recovered a storage drive.

Hundreds of private conversations.

Board discussions.

Bank instructions.

Attorney calls.

Several had already been forwarded to one of my competitors.

One message from Emily read:

**"Caroline copied too much.

Find the girl before Daniel does."**

I stared at my wife.

**The hidden child wasn't the family secret Emily feared most — she appeared to be the only person left who could lead me to proof that conversations inside my own home had been secretly recorded and sold for years.**
