Chapter 2: What They Filed Last Week

Part 2 — Comment Continuation

---

The room went completely still.

Evelyn's eyes moved from the folder to my face.

Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

"You're embarrassing this family."

I looked at him.

"Your mother just put our four-year-old son on the floor like an animal.

There is no family left to embarrass."

He let go.

I set Noah on a chair — a proper chair, at the table — and kept the folder open.

"This property was transferred into my name fourteen months ago," I said.

"Every person sitting in this room is a guest in my house."

One of the aunts stood up to leave.

Evelyn stopped her with one hand.

Then Evelyn did something I didn't expect.

She smiled.

"You think a piece of paper protects you?" she said quietly.

"Daniel.

Tell her what we filed last week."

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Daniel." Her voice sharpened.

"Tell her."

He still didn't speak.

That's when I noticed his hands.

They were shaking.

Not from anger.

From fear.

Whatever they had filed — he already knew it wasn't going to work.

But Evelyn didn't know that yet.

And someone else in that room did.
