Chapter 2: His Own House

Ryan didn't answer.

He walked to the kitchen, poured a glass of water, and kept his back to me.

"Ryan.

What judge is Noah talking about?"

He set the glass down slowly.

"My mother is trying to help us.

You've always been too emotional about discipline."

"He was chained to the floor."

"It wasn't like that."

"I have eyes.

I saw it."

Diane stepped in from the hallway.

She wasn't even pretending to look sorry.

"You coddle that boy.

He needs structure.

Ryan understands that."

I looked at my husband.

"Tell me what's on your phone."

He didn't move.

Noah was still standing in the doorway, watching us.

Four years old.

Holding the hem of his shirt with both hands the way he does when he's frightened.

I walked to Ryan and held out my hand.

"Show me the phone."

Diane said, "Don't you dare speak to my son that way in his own house."

His own house.

That's when I understood something had already been decided without me.

Ryan finally looked at me.

His voice was quiet.

Almost gentle.

"I've already spoken to a lawyer."
