Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Here Was Supposed to Know

He was crying so hard he could barely speak.

"Rosa," he whispered.

"Rosa Conti."

Mom's whole body went still.

"How do you know that name?" she breathed.

"Nobody here knows that name."

The old man looked up at her, tears running into his beard.

"Because I've been looking for you for fifty years."

I didn't understand.

Mom never talked about her life in Italy.

Not once.

I always thought it was too painful.

The hostess hadn't moved.

She stood there gripping her little podium, her face completely drained.

The owner didn't even look at her.

His eyes never left Mom.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a photograph.

Old.

Worn at the edges.

He held it up with a shaking hand.

Mom made a sound I had never heard from her before.

"That's impossible," she whispered.

"I burned every photo."

"I kept one," he said.

"I kept it every single day."

I looked at the photo.

A young woman.

A young man.

Standing outside a small stone building somewhere in Italy.

Laughing.

The young woman was my mother.

I turned to her.

"Mom.

Who is this man?"

She didn't answer me.

She was already weeping.

And then she said a name — quietly, like a prayer — that made my blood run c0ld.

Because that name was on my birth certificate.
