Chapter 1: The Woman Who Just Wanted to Feel at Home

The hostess refused to seat my elderly mother because we "didn't look like we could afford the bill" — 10 minutes later, the owner came rushing from the kitchen in tears.

It was Mom's 78th birthday.

She didn't ask for much.

She only wanted to try the little Italian bistro downtown that her church friends kept talking about.

"I want to feel at home again," she said.

Mom had moved to the States from Italy when she was pregnant with me.

We walked in holding hands.

The young hostess looked us up and down.

Slowly.

Starting at Mom's orthopedic shoes and ending at her cane.

Then she smiled.

"I'm so sorry, but we're fully booked tonight."

I looked past her.

Half the tables were empty.

"There are open tables right there," I said.

She lowered her voice like she was doing me a favor.

"Ma'am…

our minimum spend is pretty high.

I just don't think this is the right fit for you two.

You look so…

cheap."

My mother's hand went limp in mine.

"Sweetheart, please.

Let's just go.

I don't want a scene."

She was trembling.

This was my mother: a woman who had raised three kids alone.

And now she was trembling because some 20-year-old had decided she didn't look wealthy enough to eat dinner.

"Imagine if someone did that to your grandmother," I told the hostess, but she only laughed in my face.

"My grandma isn't some beggar who'd ever end up in a situation like that."

I had just reached for Mom's hand to leave when I heard glass shatter in the kitchen.

The little service window behind the hostess stand was open.

An elderly man in a chef's jacket stood frozen behind it, staring at my mother.

Then he disappeared.

Two seconds later, the kitchen doors banged open, and he came rushing into the dining room.

He stopped three feet from my mother.

And then he dropped to his knees at her feet and grabbed Mom's hand.

The entire dining room went silent.

Mom looked down at him, confused.

With his next words, Mom's cane clattered to the floor.

The hostess's face turned white.
