Chapter 2: What the Little Girl Remembered
Lily walked slowly down the aisle, eyes fixed on the floor.
She didn't look at Daniel.
She didn't look at Vanessa.
She walked straight toward Emma and stopped.
Then she reached up and took Emma's hand.
The courtroom went completely silent.
"Lily." Daniel's voice was low.
Warning.
"Come sit with Daddy."
Lily shook her head.
Judge Whitaker crouched slightly so she was at eye level with the girl.
"Sweetheart, can you tell the court what you told me earlier?
About what you saw at home?"
Lily clutched her rabbit tighter.
Then she looked up at the judge with the kind of calm that only a child who has already cried everything out can manage.
"The mean lady told Daddy to make Emma go away.
She said the baby wasn't part of the plan."
Vanessa shot to her feet.
"That is absolutely—"
"Sit down, Ms.
Price." The judge's voice was iron.
Daniel had gone pale.
His attorney leaned in and whispered urgently.
But Lily wasn't finished.
"She said if Emma didn't leave…" Lily paused, squeezing the rabbit.
"She said she had something that would make the judge send Emma away instead."
Emma's hand tightened around Lily's.
What did Vanessa have?
And why had a six-year-old been the only one willing to say it out loud?
