Chapter 1: The Woman Who Gave Everything Away

The courtroom in Franklin County, Ohio, went still as Emma Caldwell stood beside her attorney with one hand resting over her eight-month pregnant belly.
She had come prepared to lose everything.
Across the aisle sat Daniel Caldwell, her husband of seven years, wearing an expensive navy suit and no wedding ring.
Beside him was Vanessa Price, the woman he had been seeing behind Emma's back.
Vanessa looked completely comfortable.
Almost proud.
She smiled while Emma stood there exhausted from sleepless nights, carrying a baby and the weight of a marriage that had already fallen apart.
Judge Margaret Whitaker looked over the divorce petition in front of her.
"Mrs.
Caldwell, your petition says you are asking for an immediate divorce and giving up your claim to the marital home, the savings account, both vehicles, and Mr.
Caldwell's business shares.
Is that accurate?"
Everyone in the room waited.
Emma's attorney looked tense, but Emma lifted her chin.
"Yes, Your Honor.
I don't want any marital property.
He can have all of it."
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
Vanessa laughed.
Not nervously.
Not accidentally.
It was a sharp laugh that showed exactly what she thought of Emma's decision.
Daniel quietly warned her, but Vanessa only covered her mouth after it was already too late.
Judge Whitaker stopped her immediately.
"Ms.
Price, interrupt once more and you will be escorted out."
Emma glanced back at Daniel.
"I don't want the house where he brought her while I was going to prenatal appointments.
I don't want the money he spent buying her jewelry.
I don't want the cars, the furniture, or anything connected to the lies."
Her voice shook, but she stayed standing.
"I only want my baby to be born far away from him."
Daniel suddenly stood.
"She's being emotional.
She's trying to make me look like some kind of monster."
"Sit down, Mr.
Caldwell," the judge ordered.
He sat, but his jaw tightened.
Emma looked directly at him.
"You already took the only things that mattered." Vanessa smirked again.
Then Judge Whitaker closed the folder in front of her and rose.
"Before I make any ruling," she said, "there is a matter this court must address." The judge explained that before the hearing, she had met a little girl crying near the vending machines outside the courtroom.
A little girl who had whispered something about what her father and the "mean lady" had done.
Daniel's expression changed instantly.
Vanessa stopped smiling.
The judge turned toward the bailiff.
"I would like that girl brought into the courtroom." Daniel gripped the edge of the table so tightly his knuckles turned white.
Then the rear doors opened.
A little girl in a yellow cardigan stepped inside, holding a worn stuffed rabbit against her chest.
Emma gasped when she saw her.
It was Lily.
Daniel's six-year-old daughter.
