My legs felt like concrete.
Five minutes.
He'd given me five minutes.
"Ryan." My voice came out barely above a whisper.
"Whatever you think you know —"
"I don't think anything." His jaw was set.
"I know."
The water was still running in the kitchen.
I stepped closer and lowered my voice.
"Please.
She's had such a perfect night.
Don't do this to her."
Something crossed his face.
Not cruelty.
Something worse.
Pity.
"She deserves to know who her father actually is."
The floor tilted under me.
Because Ryan shouldn't have known anything about her father.
I had never told Iris.
I had never told anyone in this town.
That was the whole reason we moved here six years ago.

"My dad recognized you." His voice didn't waver.
"From before."
I heard the tap shut off in the kitchen.
Iris's footsteps crossed the tile.
Four minutes left.
Maybe less.
