Chapter 1: The Boy at the Door

The boy who brought my daughter home from prom looked me dead in the eyes and said, "You have 5 minutes to tell her the truth, or I will."
Iris had been living for prom night.
I hadn't seen my daughter that excited in years — maybe ever.
Her date was Ryan.
Football captain.
Honor student.
The boy half the girls in her school had been hoping would ask them.
He asked Iris.
She glowed for days afterward.
All she talked about was her dress, the corsage, and how her stomach flipped every time she thought about the night.
Growing up without her father had already cost her so much.
I desperately wanted this to be the one night she'd remember forever.
Prom night arrived.
Ryan came to the door with flowers.
Iris looked absolutely radiant.
I stood in the driveway watching their car disappear around the corner, just grateful my girl had this moment.
A few hours passed.
Then my phone lit up.
"MOM.
YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO BELIEVE WHAT JUST HAPPENED."
I laughed and wrote back immediately, asking her to tell me everything.
A minute went by.
"I'LL EXPLAIN WHEN I GET HOME.
IT'S INSANE."
Then nothing.
No more messages.
By midnight I was pacing.
Finally, headlights swept across the living room wall.
Iris burst through the front door — thrilled and overwhelmed and wide-eyed all at once.
"Mom, tonight something happened and I need to —"
She stopped mid-sentence and glanced back at Ryan standing in the doorway.
"Actually, let me get you some water."
The second she turned toward the kitchen, Ryan's entire demeanor shifted.
The easy smile he'd worn all evening was completely gone.
My stomach dropped.
"Ryan, what's —"
His voice came out low and steady.
Too steady.
"You have five minutes to tell her the truth."
I couldn't breathe.
"Or I will."

What truth is Ryan talking about — and does Iris already know?
