Chapter 2: The Paper With No Name On It

Daniel knelt beside Clara, his hands shaking as he checked her pulse.
"Call an ambulance," he ordered without looking up.
Evelyn didn't move.
She set down her fork slowly, as if nothing unusual had happened.
"She's dramatic," Evelyn said.
"She fainted because she refused to rest properly.
That's not my fault."
Marissa stepped forward, her voice breaking.
"She hasn't eaten since yesterday morning, Mr.
Carter.
Mrs.
Evelyn told her she couldn't sit down until every dish was cleared and the kitchen was clean."
The room went still.
Daniel looked up at his mother.
"She gave birth six days ago."
Evelyn's expression didn't change.
"Women in this family don't fall apart after a baby.
She knew what was expected."
Daniel stood slowly.
"What was expected." His voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
That's when Marissa reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
"There's something else," she whispered.
"I found this near Noah's bassinet this afternoon.
I didn't understand it at first.
But after what I heard Mrs.
Evelyn say on the phone last night—"
Victor lunged forward.
"Don't."
Daniel's bodyguard caught him by the arm.
Marissa held the paper out to Daniel with trembling hands.
He unfolded it.
His face went white.
