Chapter 1: The Woman Who Collapsed While They Ate
Six days after a difficult emergency delivery, Clara Carter was found unconscious beside her newborn son's bassinet while her mother-in-law calmly sat nearby eating dinner.
Instead of showing concern for Clara, Evelyn dismissed the exhausted new mother as lazy because she had failed to finish serving the meal.
Daniel immediately took Noah into his arms and hurried to check his wife.
Then someone started pounding desperately against a locked service door.
When Daniel opened it, Marissa—the trusted housekeeper—rushed forward and warned that he could not imagine what Evelyn had done.
But before Marissa could explain, Victor came out of the dining room and violently tried to silence her.
Daniel stopped him.
Then Evelyn herself rushed toward Noah's bassinet even after Daniel had already found Clara unconscious.
She was stopped too, and Daniel's bodyguards sealed the room.
Why had a woman only six days postpartum been expected to serve dinner until she collapsed?

And why did Evelyn still try to reach Noah instead of helping Clara?
