Chapter 2: The Voice on the Last Recording

The room was still frozen when I pressed play on that last clip.

The voice was calm.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

"She keeps the investment account details in her phone notes.

The company shares transfer date is the 14th.

You need to move before then."

My sister-in-law slowly set down her glass.

Her face didn't change.

That was what told me everything.

My husband turned to her.

"Patricia."

She didn't answer.

"Patricia.

That's your voice."

"You're upset," she said quietly.

"You're hearing things."

"I've heard your voice my entire life," he said.

"Don't."

She looked at me then.

Not with guilt.

With something colder.

"You were never right for him.

I was protecting this family."

"By helping someone try to h*rt a pregnant woman?" my husband said.

She lifted her chin.

"Nothing happened."

"Because she had already recorded everything." His voice broke.

"How long?"

Patricia said nothing.

But her phone lit up on the table between us.

The name on the screen made my husband go completely still.

It was his business partner.

The man who handled every financial transfer we had ever made.
