Chapter 3: What the Study Held

Detective Ruiz crossed the room in eight steps.

Vanessa moved first.

She placed herself between him and the study door, arms slightly out, chin raised.

"You need a warrant to go in there," she said.

"We have one." He held up the folded document.

"Signed this morning."

Vanessa's arms dropped.

One of the officers stepped around her and opened the door.

The study was not large.

A desk.

A filing cabinet.

A laptop, closed.

And on the desk, a manila envelope with Elena's name written across the front in red ink — not Vanessa's handwriting.

Daniel walked to the doorway.

He stared at the envelope.

"That's not mine," he said.

"No," Elena said from behind him.

"It isn't."

She had made it to her feet.

She stood in the hallway, one hand pressed to the wall, the other resting on her stomach.

Her voice was steady.

"Vanessa placed it there three days ago.

I watched her do it on the camera feed.

She told you it was a forged property transfer — that I had created it to steal the house from your mother."

Mrs.

Howard turned sharply.

"She showed it to me.

She said you were planning to—"

"I know what she said." Elena looked at the older woman.

"She showed it to you before she planted it.

So that when it was found, you would already believe the story."

The room was very quiet.

Detective Ruiz pulled on a glove and lifted the envelope from the desk.

"We'll need to process this," he said.

"There's more," Elena said.

"Bottom drawer.

Left side."

The officer opened it.

Inside: a second envelope, a burner phone still in its packaging, and a small notebook with dates written in columns.

Vanessa made a sound — not quite a word.

Something between a breath and a protest.

Daniel picked up the notebook.

He turned to a page near the middle.

His face went still.

"These are dates," he said slowly.

"These are the dates Elena had her prenatal appointments."

"Yes," Elena said.

He turned another page.

"And these are—" He stopped.

He looked at his wife.

"These are the days you told me you were visiting your mother."

Vanessa said nothing.

"You weren't visiting her, were you?" His voice had changed.

The confusion was gone.

Something harder had replaced it.

"Daniel, I can explain—"

"Were you following her?"

The silence answered before Vanessa could.

Mrs.

Howard sat down heavily in the chair near the window.

She pressed both hands flat on her knees.

She did not look at Vanessa.

Detective Ruiz turned to Elena.

"Are you able to stand?

We can have paramedics here within—"

"I'm all right," Elena said.

"The baby is all right.

I made sure of that before I fell."

"You planned the fall," Ruiz said.

Not a question.

"I needed her to act in front of witnesses," Elena said.

"She had been careful for months.

She never did anything where anyone could see.

So I gave her an audience and a moment she couldn't resist."

Vanessa's voice came out thin and sharp.

"You used your own child as bait."

Every person in the room turned toward her.

The words had come out wrong.

Even Vanessa seemed to know it the moment they left her mouth.

Daniel set the notebook down on the desk.

"Don't," he said quietly.

"Don't say another word."

But Vanessa had never known when to stop.

"She manipulated all of you," she said, her voice rising.

"She planned this entire thing.

She is not the victim here.

She is the one who—"

"Mrs.

Howard." Detective Ruiz turned to Vanessa.

"I'm going to need you to come with us."

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked at the floor.

She looked at Mrs.

Howard.

The older woman turned her face toward the window.

"I want a lawyer," Vanessa said.

"That's your right," Ruiz said.

"Officer Chen will stay with you."

He turned back to Elena.

"Is there anything else inside this house we should know about?"

Elena reached into the pocket of her cardigan and produced a small USB drive.

"Forty-three minutes of audio," she said.

"And a separate file.

Conversations between Vanessa and a man named Gerald Pryce.

He's a private investigator she hired eight months ago.

The recordings include her instructions to him."

She held the drive out.

Ruiz took it carefully.

"Instructions to do what?" he asked.

Elena looked at Vanessa one last time.

"To make sure I lost the baby," she said.

"Naturally, if possible.

Any other way, if not."

The room didn't go quiet this time.

It went cold.
