The front doors opened.
Detective Ruiz walked in with two officers behind him.
The room went completely still.
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"What is this?" she said, stepping back.
"Why are the police here?"
Mrs.
Howard turned to her son.
"Daniel.
What is happening?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He was watching Elena.
Elena opened her eyes slowly.
She pressed one hand to the floor and pushed herself upright.
No one helped her.
No one moved.
"She needs a doctor!" Mrs.
Howard cried.
"She's fine," Vanessa said quickly.
Too quickly.
Detective Ruiz looked at Vanessa.
"Ma'am, we received a call from this address.
We also received a file.
Forty-three minutes of recorded audio and seventeen camera clips from inside this home."
Vanessa's face changed.
"That's not possible," she whispered.
"The cameras were installed six weeks ago," Elena said quietly.
"Right after you told me I would never leave this house with anything."
The room shifted.
Mrs.
Howard's hand went to her mouth.
Daniel finally looked at his wife.
Really looked at her.
"Vanessa," he said slowly.
"What did you do?"
Vanessa said nothing.
But her eyes moved to one place.
The study door.
And Detective Ruiz had already noticed.
