Chapter 3: What Was Deleted

Ryan didn't sleep that night.

Oliver was breathing steadily in the hospital bed, a small pulse monitor clipped to his finger, the green line on the screen moving in slow, reassuring waves.

Maya had finally drifted off in the chair beside him, her head tilted against her shoulder, one hand still resting on Oliver's blanket.

Ryan sat across the room with Maya's phone in his hands.

She had handed it to him without hesitation.

No password prompt.

No pause.

Just placed it in his palm and said, "Look at everything."

He opened the message app first.

The thread from the unknown number — the same one that had texted him at the hospital — showed two previous attempts.

Both sent to Maya's phone.

Both dated more than two months apart.

Both marked as read.

Ryan's chest tightened.

He scrolled to the deleted folder.

Forty-one messages.

All from the same number.

All deleted within minutes of arrival.

He read the oldest one.

*"Maya, my name is Diane.

I used to work for Evelyn.

Please don't ignore this.

She is building a case against you.

I have documents.

Call me."*

Ryan set the phone down on his knee.

He picked it up again and called the number.

It rang twice.

"I wondered when you'd call," the woman said.

Her voice was steady but careful, like someone who had been rehearsing this moment.

"Is Maya all right?"

"She's in the hospital," Ryan said.

"Our son was with her."

A long pause.

"I'm so sorry.

I tried to reach her.

I tried twice."

"Someone deleted your messages."

"I know," Diane said.

"I figured that out when she never responded.

That's when I texted you directly."

Ryan stood and walked to the window.

The parking lot below was quiet.

A single nurse crossed the wet pavement toward the entrance.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"I was Evelyn's personal assistant," Diane said.

"For eleven years.

I left eight months ago, when she asked me to do something I couldn't do."

"What did she ask you to do?"

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"She asked me to access Maya's medical records through a contact she had at the clinic.

She wanted documentation that Maya had been prescribed anxiety medication.

She said she needed it for a legal filing."

Ryan's hand tightened around the phone.

"Maya has never taken anxiety medication."

"I know," Diane said.

"That's why I left.

And that's why I started keeping records of everything Evelyn told me to do."

"What kind of records?"

"Emails.

Printed instructions.

A log I kept on my own.

Dates, times, what she asked, what I did or refused to do." She stopped.

"Ryan, she has been planning this since before Oliver was born.

The moment Maya became pregnant, Evelyn started building the case."

Ryan turned away from the window.

Maya was still asleep.

Oliver's monitor beeped softly.

"She told me once," Diane continued, "that Maya was going to take you away from her.

Those were her exact words.

'That woman is going to take my son, and I will not allow it.' I thought she meant emotionally.

I didn't understand until later that she meant legally."

"She was going to use Oliver," Ryan said.

"She was going to use Oliver to keep you tied to her," Diane said.

"If she controlled custody, she controlled access.

She controlled where Oliver lived, who raised him, when you could see him.

And that meant she controlled you."

Ryan sat back down in the chair.

His mother had not been trying to protect Oliver.

She had been trying to own him.

"Will you testify?" Ryan asked.

Diane didn't hesitate.

"I already called the detective assigned to her case this afternoon," she said.

"I'm meeting with them tomorrow morning.

I'm bringing everything."

Ryan exhaled slowly.

"Thank you," he said.

"Don't thank me yet," Diane said quietly.

"There's something else you need to know.

Something I didn't put in the messages because I wasn't sure how to say it."

Ryan went still.

"Evelyn didn't set this up alone," Diane said.

"Someone inside your house helped her.

Someone who knew Maya's schedule.

Someone who knew when Oliver's breathing was worse.

Someone who knew exactly when to delete those messages so Maya would never see them."

The room felt smaller suddenly.

Ryan looked at the phone in his hand.

Then at the door.

Then back at Oliver's sleeping face.

"Who?" he said.

May you like

Diane said a name.

And Ryan's world shifted sideways.
