Chapter 2: The Message From Nowhere

PART 2 ⬇️

As the officers led Evelyn toward the door, she stopped.

She turned back to Ryan with handcuffs on her wrists and something cold in her eyes.

"You think this is over?" she said quietly.

"I have friends in that courthouse, Ryan.

I have had them for twenty years."

Ryan didn't answer.

But one of the officers did.

"Ma'am.

Don't say another word without a lawyer."

Evelyn smiled anyway.

At the hospital, Oliver was stabilized.

His breathing steadied.

The color came back to his face.

Maya sat beside his bed, holding his small hand, still shaking.

Ryan sat next to her.

He hadn't let go of her since they left the house.

Then his phone lit up.

A message from a number he didn't recognize.

*"She's been planning this for eight months.

I have proof.

I tried to warn Maya twice.

She never got my messages.

Check who had access to her phone."*

Ryan stared at the screen.

He looked at Maya.

"Did you ever receive any messages warning you about my mother?"

Maya frowned slowly.

"No.

Never."

Ryan's jaw tightened.

Someone had been blocking them.

And that someone was still out there.

---

What Ryan found when he checked Maya's phone left him completely speechless.
