Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Door

Marcus walked toward the door at the end of the corridor without hurrying.

His footsteps were measured and even on the hardwood floor.

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't run.

He simply walked, and the sound of each step filled the hallway like a countdown.

He pushed the door open.

The man standing inside was not a member of the household staff.

He was somewhere in his fifties, heavyset, wearing a dark jacket that was slightly too formal for the afternoon.

He had the look of someone who had spent years being paid to be invisible and had almost succeeded.

Marcus: Who are you?

The man glanced past Marcus toward Victoria.

A single look.

The kind that asks for permission.

Marcus: Don't look at her.

Look at me.

The man straightened.

Man: My name is Garrett.

I work private security consulting.

Marcus: For whom?

Another glance toward Victoria.

Faster this time, almost reflexive.

Marcus: I won't ask again.

Garrett: I was contracted through a third party.

I'm not at liberty to —

Marcus: You're standing in my house.

In a room you were not invited into.

Watching my employee through a gap in a door.

You will tell me who hired you, or I will have you removed and we will have this conversation with my legal team present.

Your choice.

Garrett's jaw worked once.

Then:

Garrett: Mrs.

Vance retained my firm six weeks ago.

Surveillance of household staff.

Specifically the nanny.

Marcus turned around.

Victoria was standing at the far end of the corridor, Leo's soft crying now the only sound between them.

Marcus: Six weeks.

Victoria: Marcus, let me explain —

Marcus: Six weeks ago, Leo was barely two months old.

Elena had been in this house for less than a month.

Victoria: I had concerns.

I had every right —

Marcus: You hired a man to watch her.

In our home.

Around our infant son.

And you said nothing to me.

Victoria: Because you wouldn't have listened!

You never listen to me about her!

From the first day she walked through that door, you defended her over me!

Marcus: I defended her today because I watched you try to k*ck her while she was holding our child.

Victoria: She provoked me!

Marcus: She was standing in a hallway holding a baby.

Victoria: She was keeping him from me!

Every time I come near Leo, she positions herself between us.

She whispers to him.

She has him on a schedule that I didn't approve.

She's taken over this house, Marcus, and you are too blind to see it because you —

She stopped herself.

Her mouth closed.

Her eyes dropped to the floor for just a moment.

Marcus: Because I what, Victoria?

She didn't finish the sentence.

Marcus turned back to Garrett.

Marcus: Pack up whatever equipment you brought into this house.

You have twenty minutes.

My head of security will escort you out and inventory everything you're carrying.

If I find that any recordings were made inside this residence, we will be speaking to my attorneys before the end of the day.

Garrett: Understood.

He moved toward the door without another word.

Marcus stepped aside to let him pass, then looked back at Victoria.

Victoria: You're treating me like the criminal here.

Marcus: I'm treating you like someone who hired a private operative to surveil a member of my household staff without my knowledge.

Because that is what you did.

Victoria: I am your wife.

I am Leo's mother.

I have rights in this house.

Marcus: You have rights.

You don't have the right to do this without telling me.

You don't have the right to build a case against the woman who may have just saved our son's life.

And you don't have the right to stand in that hallway and perform distress for my benefit when you thought I couldn't see you.

Victoria: I wasn't performing —

Marcus: I stood behind that library door for four minutes, Victoria.

Four minutes.

I watched everything.

She went very still.

Marcus: The kick.

The grab for the carrier.

The moment you heard my footsteps and changed your entire posture in under two seconds.

I saw all of it.

Victoria's voice dropped to something quieter.

Harder.

Victoria: Then you also saw that she wouldn't give him to me.

My own son.

Marcus: Elena.

Bring Leo to his room, please.

Stay with him.

Elena moved quickly down the hallway, her head down, the baby pressed close.

She didn't look at Victoria as she passed.

When the sound of Elena's footsteps had faded up the staircase, Marcus looked at his wife for a long moment without speaking.

Then:

Marcus: I want to know what you were really trying to do in that hallway.

And I want the truth this time.

Victoria looked at him.

Something shifted behind her eyes — not guilt, not fear, but something more calculated than either.

Victoria: You want the truth?

She reached into her jacket pocket again.

This time, what she placed on the side table was not a photograph.

May you like

It was a folded legal document.

And Marcus's name was at the top.
