Chapter 7: What the Drive Contained

The FBI took over the following morning.

Two agents arrived at seven.

They processed the gray cat in Emma's room, extracted the drive, and spent four hours in my kitchen with a laptop and a portable hard drive of their own.

I made coffee.

They didn't drink it.

At eleven-fifteen, the senior agent — a woman named Flores — sat down across from me at the kitchen table.

"The drive is intact," she said.

"What's on it?"

"Nine years of transaction records across four shell companies.

Wire transfers, account numbers, names." She set a folder on the table but didn't open it.

"Claire organized it.

Labeled everything.

She knew exactly what she had found and exactly what it meant."

"She was frightened," I said.

"She told Carol she was frightened."

"She had reason to be." Flores looked at me steadily.

"Three of the names in these records are people with federal connections.

One of them is the agent Carol Deane spoke to in 2021."

I looked at the folder.

"Victor Hale didn't just run a financial operation," Flores continued.

"He ran protection for it.

He knew which investigators to compromise and which ones to avoid.

He's been untouchable because he built the walls himself." She paused.

"Claire found the foundation."

"And she d*ed for it."

Flores didn't soften it.

"We believe so.

Yes."

I put both hands flat on the table.

"Marcus Webb," I said.

"He said it wasn't supposed to go that far."

"Mr.

Webb has been cooperative since approximately four this morning," Flores said.

"He was recruited by Hale's organization two years before he introduced you to Vanessa.

He provided your background, your schedule, your emotional state after Claire's d*ath.

He identified you as a viable target."

"Because I was grieving."

"Because you were grieving, you had a young child, and you worked long hours.

You were unlikely to look too closely." She opened the folder.

"He also confirmed that Vanessa's real name is Nina Sorel.

She has operated under at least six identities across three states.

She is currently in federal custody."

I stared at the name.

Nina Sorel.

I had said *I do* to a woman named Nina Sorel in front of forty people.

"What happens now?" I said.

"We move on Hale today.

The records on this drive, combined with Webb's cooperation and what Carol Deane has provided, are sufficient for the warrant." She closed the folder.

"I want to be honest with you, Mr.

Mercer.

This will become public.

Your name will appear in connection with the case.

There will be a period that is difficult."

"Will Emma be safe?"

"With Hale in custody and Webb and Sorel already detained, yes.

The network loses its operational capacity once Hale is arrested."

I nodded slowly.

"One more thing," Flores said.

She reached into her bag and placed a small evidence bag on the table.

Inside it was a folded piece of paper.

"This was in the drive casing.

Tucked behind the chip." She slid it toward me.

"It's addressed to you."

Claire's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

I didn't open it at the table.

I waited until Flores and her partner had gone back to the living room.

Then I unfolded it with both hands.

*Daniel — if you found this, I'm sorry I couldn't tell you in person.

I didn't want to frighten you.

I thought I had more time.

Watch over Emma.

She's braver than either of us knew.

I love you both.

— C*

I folded it back along the same creases.

May you like

Held it for a moment.

Then set it down gently on the table, face up, in the light.
