Chapter 2: The Woman Who Didn't Exist

**— PART 2 —**
Detective Ramirez pulled me aside while her team continued searching.
"Mr.
Mercer, we ran Vanessa's name through the system."
She paused.
"There's no record of a Vanessa Mercer.
No driver's license.
No social security match.
The identity she gave you doesn't exist."
The room tilted.
I had married a woman who didn't exist on paper.
I looked across at Emma, still clutching Bunny, watching me with those quiet eyes that had been trying to tell me the truth for months.
"How is that possible?" I said.
"We filed a marriage certificate.
I saw her ID."
"The documents were f0rged," Ramirez said.
"Very well done.
This wasn't impulsive."
Then one of the officers called from the hallway.
He was holding a small envelope found taped behind the laundry room door.
Inside was a photograph.
Not of our family.
It was Emma.
Alone in our backyard.
Dated fourteen months ago.
Before I had ever met Vanessa.
Before I had even started dating again.
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
"Someone sent her to us," I said.
Ramirez didn't disagree.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Familiar in a way I couldn't place.
"Daniel.
Don't trust what they're telling you."
"Who is this?"
A long pause.
"Someone who's been watching Vanessa far longer than you have."
The line went d*ad.

What Daniel found out next about Vanessa's real identity left investigators stunned.
