Chapter 7: The Paper on the Table

I brought the paper directly to Ramirez.

She had it photographed, bagged, and sent to the forensic document team within the hour.

Then she spread a copy on the desk between us and we read it together.

Twelve names.

Organized in three tiers.

At the bottom, handlers — six names, including a man listed only as "R.

Vance." In the middle tier, three names with corporate titles next to them.

Meridian.

Two subsidiaries I hadn't heard of.

At the top, two names.

The second one I didn't recognize.

The first one I did.

"Gerald Foss," I said.

"He's not just the lawyer," Ramirez said.

"According to this, he's an operational director.

He approves target selection."

Target selection.

The words sat on the table like something physical.

"He chose Emma," I said.

Ramirez didn't flinch from it.

"If this document is accurate, yes.

Someone in Foss's tier reviewed the surveillance from the gym — the footage your daughter's bedroom camera would have captured before Vanessa arrived — and approved your household as a target."

"There was footage from before Vanessa.

From the gym camera."

"We believe the woman you knew as Lynn placed a device in your gym bag.

A small secondary camera.

We found trace adhesive residue on the interior lining when we processed your belongings last night."

I thought about the woman with the dark hair.

The warm smile.

The questions about Emma that had seemed so ordinary.

"She was assessing us," I said.

"Yes.

And someone reviewed that assessment and said yes."

I looked at Foss's name on the page.

"Can you move on him?"

"We're building the warrant now.

The document alone isn't enough — we need to verify the financial connections independently.

But we're close." She paused.

"There's something else."

She slid a second sheet across.

A photograph, printed from surveillance footage.

Grainy but clear enough.

A woman.

Short dark hair.

Standing outside a pharmacy four blocks from Karen's house.

"That was taken this morning," Ramirez said.

"Forty minutes before you came in."

I looked at the photo.

"She's been following me."

"Or protecting you.

Possibly both." Ramirez tapped the image.

"We think this is your caller.

We think her name is Teresa Malone.

Forty-one years old.

Her daughter was taken into state custody eighteen months ago following an anonymous tip that alleged neglect.

The tip was fabricated.

By the time she proved it, her daughter had been placed with a foster family in another state."

The room went very quiet.

"Meridian filed the tip," I said.

"We believe so.

We think Teresa got too close to the truth.

They used the system against her to remove her leverage." Ramirez looked at me.

"She's been investigating them alone for over a year.

She's the one who identified the pattern across multiple households.

She's the reason we had a starting framework when your case came in last night."

"She did all of that to get her daughter back."

"Yes."

I looked at the photograph again.

The woman standing outside the pharmacy.

Alone.

Moving from place to place.

Feeding information to a stranger because she had no one else left to feed it to.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I looked at Ramirez.

She nodded and pointed to the small recorder on the desk.

I answered and put it on speaker.

"You met with Vanessa." Teresa's voice.

Still low, but steadier than before.

"Yes."

"Did she give you names?"

"She gave me a document.

We're verifying it."

A pause.

"Foss is real.

The tiers are real.

But the document is incomplete.

There's a name she didn't give you."

"Why wouldn't she give me all of them?"

"Because the last name on that list is the person who recruited her.

And that person is the only reason Vanessa is still alive." Another pause.

"His name is Martin Cray.

He runs the operation.

Foss is management.

Cray is the architect."

Ramirez was already writing.

"Teresa," I said carefully.

"We know who you are.

We know about your daughter.

Detective Ramirez is here with me right now.

She wants to help you."

Silence.

Then: "Is she clean?"

Ramirez leaned toward the phone.

"Ms.

Malone.

My name is Sarah Ramirez.

I have been working this case since last night.

I don't know who the leak inside the department is, but I can tell you it is not in my unit.

I give you my word."

A long pause.

"Martin Cray has a property in Chester County," Teresa said finally.

"He uses it as a server location.

If you move on Foss first, Cray will wipe it within hours."

"Then we move on both simultaneously," Ramirez said.

"Can you do that?"

"Give me the Chester County address and I'll have a judge on the phone in twenty minutes."

Another silence.

Longer this time.

May you like

Then Teresa gave the address.

And for the first time since the night Emma stood on her chair with Bunny pressed against her chest, I felt the weight begin to shift.
