Chapter 1: The Night My Daughter Told the Truth

"She's not my new mommy."

My four-year-old daughter stood on her chair clutching her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Then she pointed across the dinner table at my wife.

"She's a monster."

Everyone froze.

Vanessa gave a nervous little laugh.

I almost joined her.

Almost.

Then my daughter started crying.

My name is Daniel Mercer, and until that night, I thought Emma was struggling to adjust after I remarried.

She had lost her mother.

She was only four.

I told myself mood changes were normal.

That Vanessa needed time.

That Emma needed patience.

Then my daughter looked at me with tears streaming down her cheeks.

"She locks my room."

Vanessa stopped smiling.

"She takes Bunny."

Emma squeezed the rabbit harder.

"She hides Mommy's picture."

My stomach tightened.

"Emma, what are you talking about?"

She pointed directly at Vanessa.

"She says Mommy d*ed because I came."

The entire table went silent.

Vanessa reacted immediately.

"That is absolutely not true."

Too fast.

Too defensive.

I looked at her.

Then at Emma.

Something in my daughter's face made every excuse I had been preparing disappear.

This wasn't a tantrum.

She was afraid.

I checked the home security footage.

Vanessa insisted I was humiliating her over the imagination of a four-year-old.

Then the video loaded.

There she was.

Vanessa leading Emma toward the laundry room.

The door closed.

Vanessa walked away.

My daughter remained inside.

Nearly an hour passed before the door opened again.

Then the audio captured the sentence I will never forget.

"Maybe tomorrow you'll remember who Mommy is now."

I stopped the recording.

Vanessa began explaining.

I didn't listen.

"Leave."

Her face changed.

"Daniel—"

"Get out."

But before she could move, Emma tugged at my sleeve.

"Daddy."

I looked down.

She pointed toward the bookshelf in her bedroom.

"There's another camera."

I thought she meant one of mine.

She didn't.

Hidden between her stuffed animals was a tiny black lens.

I had never installed it.

The police arrived.

They searched the house.

And found more.

One camera in the hallway.

Another in the laundry room.

Another inside my office.

Someone had been watching us.

At first, I assumed Vanessa had placed them after moving in.

That possibility was frightening enough.

Then Detective Sarah Ramirez examined the bedroom camera.

Her expression changed.

"How long has your wife lived here?"

I answered.

She checked something again.

Then looked at me.

"This camera wasn't installed three weeks ago."

My chest tightened.

"How old is it?"

"Approximately eleven months."

I stared at her.

Vanessa had not been living with us eleven months earlier.

That meant someone had been recording my daughter before my new wife ever moved into the house.

The police removed the memory card.

What they found made everything worse.

The footage was not only from our home.

There was another house.

Another family.

And another little girl.

I stared at the screen, then at Detective Ramirez.

"Who is she?"

The detective didn't answer immediately.

That silence terrified me.

Finally, she said, "We're still trying to identify her."

Across the room, Emma sat holding Bunny against her chest.

I looked at my daughter.

Then at the cameras spread across the evidence table.

And for the first time, another possibility entered my mind.

Maybe Vanessa had not met a widowed father by chance.

Maybe our marriage had never begun accidentally.

Maybe someone had been watching us long before she entered our lives.

Waiting.

Choosing the right moment.

And if that was true, one question mattered more than everything else.

What had she wanted with my daughter?

Who put those cameras there — and what did they want with Emma?
