Chapter 8: What a Long Time Ago Means

The phrase stayed with Daniel through the drive back to Carol's house, through dinner, through the bath and bedtime story and the four times Lily got up to check that her door was open.

*A long time ago.*

He called Voss at nine-thirty, after Lily was finally asleep.

"What did he mean?" Daniel said.

"What happened a long time ago?"

"We've been interviewing him since this afternoon," Voss said.

"He's not cooperating fully, but he's talking.

People like Kevin Pratt usually do — they can't help themselves.

They want you to know how much they know."

"And?"

"Rachel and Kevin grew up in a home that was — " Voss chose her words carefully.

"There was significant @buse in that household.

Both of them were victims of it as children.

Their father was incarcerated when Rachel was fifteen and Kevin was twelve."

Daniel sat down on the edge of Carol's guest bed.

"She never told me any of that."

"She didn't tell anyone.

She built a life that looked nothing like where she came from.

But Kevin never got out the same way she did.

He carried it differently." Voss paused.

"When he was released fourteen months ago, he didn't reach out to Rachel because he missed her.

He reached out because he wanted something from her.

Money, initially.

Then more."

"More."

"He told her that if she didn't give him access — to the house, to Lily — he would go to the people who knew her now and tell them everything about where she came from.

Destroy the life she'd built." Voss's voice was flat and precise.

"He used her shame as a lever.

And it worked, because she let it work."

Daniel pressed the heel of his hand against his forehead.

"She was so afraid of her past," he said slowly, "that she let him walk right into her present."

"Yes."

"And Lily paid for it."

"Yes."

He was quiet for a long time.

"Is there anything else?" he said.

"Anything else she was hiding?"

"There's one more thing." Voss paused.

"Rachel had been in contact with a family advocate organization — a domestic @buse resource center — six months ago.

She reached out once, gave a false name, and then never called back."

"She almost asked for help."

"She almost asked for help," Voss confirmed.

"And then she didn't."

Daniel thought about the woman he had married.

The controlled hands.

The precise way she folded things.

The way she always positioned herself between Lily and the front door when they were leaving the house.

He had thought it was a habit.

A quirk.

"She was watching for him," Daniel said.

"Every time we left the house.

She was watching."

"Probably."

"And I never asked why."

"Mr.

Marsh — "

"I know.

I know you're going to tell me I couldn't have known."

"I was going to tell you," Voss said quietly, "that you asked the right question tonight.

That's what matters now."

He looked across the hallway at the thin line of light under Lily's door.

She had asked him to leave the hall light on.

He had left it on.

"What happens to Kevin?" he said.

"The DA is filing charges tomorrow.

Crjminal harassment, stalking, possession of surveillance materials involving a minor, violation of parole conditions.

There may be additional charges depending on what the full investigation turns up." Voss paused.

"He is not getting out of this."

"And Rachel?"

"Child endangerment.

Unlawful confinement of a minor.

Her cooperation is on record.

The courts will weigh it." A pause.

"She asked about Lily again today.

Through her attorney this time.

She asked if Lily was eating."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"She's eating," he said.

"I'll make sure that gets passed along."

He said goodnight and set the phone down.

He sat in the dark for a while.

Then he got up, walked across the hall, and opened Lily's door quietly.

She was asleep on her side, one hand tucked under her cheek.

The hall light fell across the foot of the bed.

The door was open.

He was here.

She was safe.

He stood there for a moment, then went back to his room and lay down on top of the covers without undressing.

May you like

He didn't sleep for a long time.

But he stayed.
