Chapter 2: The Room Behind the Locked Door

The mother screamed as the officer took her arm.

"You have no right!

She's my child!

I can raise her how I want!"

The father stepped in front of his daughter, shielding her.

"Don't let her near my girl."

The little girl pressed her face into her father's chest and wouldn't let go.

One officer moved through the hallway while the others stayed in the kitchen.

Then he called out from the back bedroom.

"Sir — you need to come see this."

The father walked in and stopped cold.

The room was locked from the outside.

There was a small mattress on the floor, a bucket in the corner, and crayon drawings covering the lower half of the wall — the same drawing, over and over.

A little figure.

Alone.

Behind a door.

The officer crouched down and looked closer at the drawings.

He turned to the father.

"How long has your daughter been sleeping in here?"

The father couldn't speak.

He had never seen this room like this.

He thought it was a storage space.

Then the little girl appeared in the doorway behind them.

She looked at the drawings on the wall, then looked up at her father.

"I wasn't allowed to come out until you got home," she said quietly.

"Every day."

The officer stood up slowly and reached for his radio.

What they found next in that house was something no one in that neighborhood could have imagined.

What was really happening in that home — and how long had this little girl been suffering alone?
