The Part Tyler Never Played

The judge paused proceedings so both sides could review the additional recording.

The youth program confirmed its source and Ellie’s permission to share it.

When the court resumed, the second video appeared on the screen.

It showed a table at the youth center.

Ellie sat in front of a camera wearing the same blue cardigan.

A volunteer stood behind it.

“Whenever you’re ready,” the volunteer said.

Ellie took a breath.

“M-my...”

She stopped.

Someone shifted a chair.

She tried again.

“M-my n-name...”

She looked down and tugged at her cardigan sleeve.

“Sorry.”

Then Ben’s voice came from beside the camera.

“You don’t have to apologize.”

Ellie looked toward him.

“I keep g-g-getting stuck.”

“We can wait.”

A few seconds passed.

Then she tried again.

“My n-name is Ellie.”

Ben began clapping.

“Don’t clap!” she laughed. “I haven’t even s-started yet!”

His laughter followed hers.

The recording continued.

Ellie talked about how people often finished her sentences before she could.

Sometimes, she explained, they guessed wrong.

Sometimes they stopped listening altogether.

She said Ben had been the first person at the youth center who simply waited.

“He doesn’t act like I’m t-t-taking too long,” she said.

Then she smiled toward the camera.

“Even when I am.”

Ben protested from somewhere offscreen.

“You’re not.”

“Ben, you’re interrupting my s-s-peech!”

The courtroom heard him laugh.

I looked toward Clara.

She had one hand pressed against her mouth.

But Ellie wasn’t finished.

On the screen, the volunteer asked, “Is there anything else you’d like to say?”

Ellie considered the question.

Then she looked toward Ben.

“Sometimes I w-w-wish I could do something for him.”

“Like what?” the volunteer asked.

Ellie shrugged.

“He’s always helping people.”

She paused.

“I think sometimes he forgets he can ask f-f-for help too.”

Ben said something too quietly for the microphone to catch.

Ellie laughed.

Then she looked straight into the camera.

“If Ben ever needs somebody to s-s-speak for him, I hope I can be b-b-brave enough.”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Ellie.

She was standing in a courtroom, holding the phone she’d once been afraid to let anyone see.

Ben was staring at the table.

Clara reached for his hand.

The judge removed his glasses.

He looked down for several seconds.

When he reached for a tissue, he did it without trying to hide it.

Then he cleared his throat.

“Thank you, Ellie.”

She nodded.

May you like

Her eyes were wet too.

But she was smiling.
