The Classroom Video

The judge did not simply take her phone.

The attorneys spoke with the court while Ellie explained that another student had recorded the incident.

The student was present and could confirm when and where it was made.

The court allowed both sides to examine it before proceeding.

We waited.

Tyler leaned toward his father.

His father whispered something.

Tyler shook his head.

That was the first time I’d seen him look frightened.

When the video finally appeared on the courtroom screen, I recognized my classroom immediately.

The clock above the whiteboard showed 1:14.

I remembered glancing at my watch when I entered.

It had just turned 1:15.

Less than a minute.

That was all I’d missed.

The recording began with laughter.

Tyler stood near my desk, holding his phone.

“Come on, listen to this!”

A girl’s voice came through the speaker.

“M-my n-name is...”

Tyler replayed it.

Then he repeated the words in an exaggerated voice.

A few students laughed.

“She talks like a broken robot,” he said.

I lowered my eyes to the notes in my lap.

The voice belonged to Ellie.

Tyler played it again.

Then Ben stepped into view.

“Turn it off.”

Tyler grinned.

“Why? Your girlfriend embarrassed?”

“Turn it off, Tyler.”

“Maybe she should learn how to talk.”

Ben moved closer.

The camera shook as the student filming shifted position.

“She told people not to share that video,” Ben said.

Tyler raised the phone.

“Too late.”

What happened next took less than five seconds.

Ben reached toward the phone.

Tyler stepped backward.

His heel caught a chair leg.

He fell.

The phone slipped from his hand.

Ben hadn’t pushed him.

But he didn’t help him up either.

The video continued playing from the floor.

Tyler laughed.

“Go on. Break it if you’re so mad.”

Then the classroom door opened.

My voice rang out.

“Ben! Step away from him!”

On the screen, Ben looked toward me.

Then he kicked the phone.

The recording ended.

I stared at the blank screen.

Every word of my testimony had been accurate.

Tyler had been on the floor.

May you like

Ben had kicked his phone.

But the part I’d missed changed how I understood everything that followed.
