Chapter 3: The Call That Exposed Them

“Counting what?” Rowan asked.
“Every dollar that disappeared from our joint account.”
His face tightened.
“You must be confused.”
“Forty-two transfers,” I said.
“All sent to Bennett Family Consulting.”
Rowan glanced at Selina’s name on the third page.
“That’s Mom’s company.”
“I know.
What I don’t know is why she received $186,000 of our money.”
“It wasn’t our money.”
My hand froze.
Dad rose slowly, still holding Leo.
“Whose money was it, Rowan?”
Rowan stepped back.
“This is a private conversation.”
“You left my daughter alone in labor,” Dad said.
“Nothing concerning her safety is private anymore.”
Rowan reached for the papers, but I pulled them away.
“Why is my signature on these transfers?”
His eyes widened.
Then his phone rang.
SELINA BENNETT.
“Answer it,” I said.
“I’ll call her later.”
Dad’s voice hardened.
“Answer it.
Put her on speaker.”
Rowan hesitated before pressing the button.
Selina spoke immediately.
“Did Phoebe find the statements?”
The room went silent.
“Mom, stop talking.”
But Selina continued, her voice sharp with panic.
“You promised she wouldn’t discover anything until after Gideon changed his will.”
I looked at Dad.
His expression had gone cold.
Then he placed another sealed document on the table.
“Phoebe,” he said, “there’s something about your marriage you need to see.”
